       - Our Kids Max Live Vacation Bible School team hosted an outreach recently in Milford and had several children attend and get connected with the church
       - One of our ministers named Kandy felt God calling her to reach out the people 'in the back row', the ones that we tend to overlook in our communities. She began to reach out to homeless people in local shelters and started a small group that grew from 3 to 25, and they are seeing consistent reports of transformation and life change.

       I have just finished a Chi Alpha Leaders Training called INCITE in Rochester, MN. It was a great time coming together with the other Chi Alpha leaders across the North Central region. A couple of great ideas that I walked away with:
       - We need to prepare our students for college by making sure they know of Chi Alpha. Talk with your Chi Alpha people about coming to visit your youth ministries and explaining their ministry on the local campus. The last months before graduation, bring in ministry professionals from your church who can meet with your graduates individually during portions of the service and help them with their future plans. Plan a trip in the early fall to go with your former students to the Chi Alpha on their local campus and help them get connected.
  
  3). Ministry of the Day: STL Projects - Check out a list of the current Speed the Light projects which we are giving our students/ministries money to support on the mission field this year.

       I lead worship at my church in Grand Island, NE whenever I'm not on the road at other churches in our district. One particular Sunday, I showed up for practice and we didn't have our drummer. We called him, and found out that he had already told the lady that schedules the worship teams that he was unable to play that morning. The reason was because he had committed to only play twice a month, reserving the other Sundays to come to church together with his family, because he lived over 35 miles away. But upon hearing that we had no one else scheduled, he changed his plans and came in to help. He didn't have to do that, he had every reason to honor his commitment, but he still came in because we needed the help. That impressed me, because I may have just stayed home. What would you do?

       - Last week I had the privilege of attending North Central University's Graduation. Two of our NYM students graduated - Kim Hassebrook of Lincoln, and Michael Durham of Omaha. Congratulations!
       - Red Cloud, NE is going to receive an award for being the #125 best church in missions giving in churches their size across the US. This is a list that has 9,000 churches. Again, congratulations.

       Recently, our National General Treasurer Doug Clay gave a devotion to the District leaders in Branson, MO. Here are a few takeaways I had from that presentation:
  
        - Make it a habit to pray with joy
        - It’s hard for the devil to sit on your lap when you’re on your knees
        - Have patience with people’s progress
        - Paul saw people for who they could be, not just who they were
        - My mom wants to know: are you smooching on your wife, and are you anointed (is it a canned       message or a Word of God)
        - Learn to love from the heart
        - If people aren’t on your heart, they’re probably on your nerves
        - In Greek society, the seed of your emotions was your stomach, your gut feelings
        - Care about people as much as you care about the outcomes they help you achieve
        - View your subordinates with respect and value their input
        - Practice MBWA (Management by walking around - the office and your workers)

       Recently, we had our annual District Business meetings at our District Council in Lincoln at Christ's Place church. Many of the items up for discussion concerned the job of the Youth and CE Director, which I currently fill. Knowing that I would have plenty of opportunity to speak to certain issues, I was preparing myself mentally and spiritually. Literally minutes before the discussion began, I bowed my head for a quick prayer. As I looked down, I noticed that the zipper on my pants was down! Quickly I fixed the situation, prayed, and then went on with the meeting. Glad I bowed my head in prayer!

       - Last week, the mother of a man that had once come to our summer camps as a kid contacted me. She had seen my posts online about the camp, and was touched because of how the camps impacted her son. She let me know that she wanted to sponsor a student to go to camp. Earlier that same day, a mother called me with asking for help to send her son to camp because of their current financial situation. God completely put the two situations together. There are still several people that need help to get to camp. If you'd like to help, email me here.

       The other day, my children and I went through Burger King to buy some Chicken Wraps at a $1 rate for a weekend special. After we ordered through the drive thru, we pulled up to the pickup window. The lady behind the counter took my money and then I asked if the wraps were good, just being friendly with conversation. Stone cold, she answered that she hadn't tried them. I responded by stating that I figured they had their employees try most items so they could help people with their selections. She told me bluntly, 'Oh, I don't eat here - Yuk!'
       Not the best representative to interact with at the drive thru window. I'm sure Burger King wouldn't train their people to respond that way - it wasn't the best promotion to help us return. But are we the same way with our churches, district, programs, leaders. Sometimes, we don't understand that our callousness and complaints don't represent our initiatives the way we would desire as well.

       Last night, I had the privilege to be with the students and leaders of Taylor Assembly of God, in the Sandhills almost 2 hours north of Grand Island. One student testified that she had just become a new Campus Missionary. Two others were foreign exchange students that thanked God for allowing them to come to Taylor and become Christians. Another student told me about how she felt called to start an early morning prayer meeting before school. They would meet for ten minutes and pray, and then attend class. It started with just a few students, and has since grown to 30. The same student was at camp last year and involved in our Thursday night HONOR service with Solomon Wang. She felt God call her to give her entire 'car' savings to STL, which she did as soon as she got home. Literally, the next day a friend of her dad's called him up to sell him a car, which he did for $25!

  2). Blog Entry: Testimonies - Here's a recent account from my friend Ryan, in Bellevue: the past 3 nites in Bellevue, we had an event called #mycity for revolution and shelter. We basically spent 2 and a half hours just praying for Bellevue and the surrounding area. 40 leaders and 200+ students each night praying the entire time. We have about 20 students from Glenwood. We spent Wednesday night specifically praying for the towns that each person lived in. (Bellevue, papillion, Glenwood, Millard, etc...) but that's not the cool part. The same time we're praying on Wednesday night, there's a night rally happening in Glenwood, at a small Baptist church. 200 high school and junior high students gave their lives to Christ! There's too many for the Baptist church to handle and they don't know what to do. Well it just so happens that my wife and I planted a cell group in Glenwood in the fall, and we have a house large enough for everyone to meet! God moved in an amazing way and answered prayer faster than I've ever seen before.

  2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - On our way into Omaha for Easter weekend, we stopped quickly in Lincoln to get some lunch at Culvers. On our way pulling out of the restaurant, we saw a homeless man on the side of a busy road, holding up a sign that said 'anything to help'. We had some leftover chicken pieces that I had suggested we give him, but my wife wasn't satisfied with that. We pulled back into Culvers, grabbed a meal deal, and handed it to him on our way back to the Interstate. I was so proud of Kim for caring enough to bless him, and for setting such a great example for our kids. What are you doing to help others, both those in need, and those watching, learning?

Vision - The current understanding of God’s preferred future for a congregation. It is cast by leadership and owned by membership. No church has a future unless its dreams are bigger than its memories. 2. Relationships - Activities that include people in the life of the church such as evangelism, outreach, assimilation, and discipleship. Jesus would say can’t belong with Him if you don’t belong to the people you go to church with. 3. Programs - These are vehicles that help us do ministry. They are functional attempts to provide projects, ministries, services, activities, and training for people connected to the congregation. 4. Management - The skeleton to the body of the church.   2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - A few weeks ago, I got my hair cut. I know - not a big incredible moment, but a lesson learned nonetheless. The stylist was a new one to the store that I go to, so I told her how I normally like my hair styled. She seemed to understand what I said and began to start the cut. The sides and back were trimmed perfectly and I was excited. Then she started on the top and cut about an inch shorter than I was used to. YIKES! - I didn't say much, just allowed her to finish the job. Once done I wandered into the bathroom and saw the damage. MUCH shorter than I had gone in years! I'm not one to worry too much about my hair, but I knew that this was going to throw people for a loop. My family was shocked and my wife did her best not to let me see her uncomfortable looks. I wore a lot of hats and made the best of the situation. - The last week or so though, I've received several compliments on my new hair cut. People seem to really like it. If they only knew! One of my wise old friends once said, 'the difference between a bad and a good haircut is two weeks'. They were right. Sometimes, we just need some time to work into a tough situation and see it better.

  Wednesday - Leaders Corner

  2). Blog Entry: Manage Finances - Many leaders today are judged mostly by the bottom line. How much money did they lose or make last year? Obviously, numbers are very important to money and souls are what matter, but sometimes the money doesn't follow the ministry. Ministers can move through periods of planting and sowing where their work doesn't earn a financial profit, but is preparing a harvest that will come to follow. - For those truly working in that period, they deserve grace and patience. But too many can use that excuse for a lack of production caused by a lack of work and/or vision. As much as we want to make money the enemy, it can be a good way of judging where we are at in our effectiveness as well. Some important money lessons/principles that I try to follow: - Find help from a money manager in your church to properly plan your budget. - Refer to them and your budget several times a year to see where you are at and properly plan for your events. - Have designated areas where you step out in faith and believe God for the increase, with your leaders approval and permission. Just as Joseph had years of famine and years of plenty, there are times for stepping out in faith and times for saving up as well. - Once your plans have been organized monetarily, don't let it control your thoughts. Move forward with ministry to people accordingly. Don't let yourself be praying for people at the altar while thinking about how much money came in the offering. - Stay personally faithful in your finances. Give regularly and be generous - Don't be afraid to ask others to give. The Bible is full of examples where people gave all they had. It's a Biblical principle, a Godly trait, and one that we should encourage in our followers, as we set the example for them. - Make sure the businesses in your community know of your ministry. Many would like to support (and make sure others know they support) life changing programs with youth and young people. - Make sure your mission drives your budget. Don't say that something is the most important thing to you and then let your money primarily support other areas. Often, our budget is full of money traps; accounts that were effective at one time but are no longer part of our vision and mission for the future. - Be the giver you are looking to develop in others.

  2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Tonight is the official championship basketball game of the Final Four tournament. It looks like Jesse Meduna is going to be our champion in our Nebraska Youth Ministries Final Four Pick'em tournament. - While watching the games, there was a moment that caught my attention. I had picked Michigan State to win it all (didn't happen!), and I was watching them play St. Louis to get to the Sweet Sixteen. It was near the end of the game and they were up a comfortable margin. A foul occurred and a St. Louis player went to the free throw line. The refs suddenly stopped the action to wipe up a wet spot in the middle of the floor, under the hoop. A player from Michigan State grabbed the mop from the ref and began working to clean up the spot. And it wasn't just any player, it was the star player for the Spartans, Draymond Green. I remember the announcers really enjoying it because it was the first time they'd seen a player pitch in to that level, not to mention an eventual superstar. - You're never too big to work hard. As your earn more responsibility, you find others to help in these areas, but there are still times when it's good for you to pitch in and get the job done. This helps teach those around you to stay humble and achieve a good work ethic, as well as reminding yourself of who you really are.

  2). Blog Entry: Testimonies - Cale was a student from West Nebraska that came to district events like camp and convention. He graduated and began attending Wyoming University, while joining in with the Chi Alpha group led by our NE missionary Derik Buescher. Last month, a car ran into him as he was walking to a group meeting. The driver was high, and hit him going about 40 MPH. It broke both of his legs and impacted his brain. Immediately I heard from Derik, as well as Cale's old youth pastor, about the accident. We started to pray. - I heard from Cale recently, and God has begun to heal his body. He had a rod put in his left leg and he will be on crutches soon. He plans to come to camp for a day and testify about what God has done, saving his life from this potential fatal calamity.

  2). Blog Entry: Outreach - The mission of Nebraska Youth Ministries is 'Students Reaching Students'. Our goal is to empower young people to do the work God called us to do on this earth, spreading His salvation and love around the world. Our mission begins and ends with students. The action is reaching out. We don't want to just entertain ourselves, we want to reach out to those who still need to know God. - Outreach should be a regular part of every youth ministry and church in Nebraska. This can happen on three different levels. First, they can encourage their students to bring their friends to the youth group, maybe providing a fun activity or award for incentive. The church can set the example by reaching out to a particular neighborhood/apartment complex and helping transport students to and from the church. Proper followup is important when visitors appear, such as postcards, calls, Facebook invites, etc. - Second, they can reach out to their city. Groups can 'adopt' playgrounds, arcades, malls, or other youth hangouts to develop relationships and invite people to church. They can pick work projects to help businesses and families in the community. They can volunteer to help at community events and programs to help spread the testimony of God's love. - Third, they can reach out to the world. Encourage students and leaders to give regularly to Speed the Light, funding our missionaries with vehicles and communication equipment. Use the STL projects to help inspire them in their fund raising, knowing where there funds will go.Promote the AIM trips sponsored by our District and National offices. Find ways to reach out to the international community in your area. - One of the best programs we have for help in local outreach is Youth Alive. You can get parents and adults involved as prayer partners. Students sign up to be campus missionaries, reaching out to their friends at school. We empower them to start Bible clubs on campus to help in that endeavor. And we provide 7 Project School Assemblies, where we've seen large percentages of students make commitments to Christ, with your students following up with them.   2). Blog Entry: Good service - The other day my wife and I had the chance to go on a date to one of our favorite restaurants in Grand Island. We drove into the parking lot and saw plenty of open spaces. As we entered the restaurant, we saw several tables available, thinking we would enter right in. But the host said that it would be a 10 to 15 minute wait before we could be seated. Surprised, we stepped back and stood near the entrance without a good place to sit and wait. We watched as several people left, and even more tables became available. My wife suggested that it would have been a good idea to let us sit down and wait at one of the open tables, not knowing why we couldn't stay there to eat at that table in the first place. - Do we ever run our churches and ministries in ways that people are needlessly waiting on us? Are there people in our churches that are thinking of ideas that could help us better serve them and the community? Do we care how they feel?

Blog Entry: Testimonies - Here's a report about BGMC from one of our pastors wives in central, NE: So we are doing March Madness in our church and we set a goal that we would try to raise $100 for the month...this morning we were like $10 from that so I told them that Pastor would take a pie in the face if we hit $100 today and that if we hit $150 today I would join him...well they came up $6 short for my pie and what does one lady do? She comes out and tells the people that we were short...I have never seen people scramble for money so fast. We ended up raising $11 extra! The goal for next week is to hit $200 total for the month. If we make it my husband and I, as well as a board member, will take a pie on April 1 at church ... GO GOD!

  2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - The last two days the leaders across Nebraska were meeting for annual Presbyter Meetings. We interview ministry credential candidates and conduct business for the Assemblies of God in Nebraska. We were honored to have the leader of Assemblies of God in Tanzania with us, Barnabas Mtokumbali. We also had an African Theological Seminary teacher with us as well, Dr. John Easter. Their discussions centered around being a truly missional church and they were riveting. Here are some key points from parts of their dissertations:- Our mission has to be God led, God inspired, and God incepted- The Transfiguration teaches us to know who Jesus is, which in turns helps us know who we will become- Missional Churches will emphasize diversity, relationship, united purposes, and clarity of mission.- An apostle is someone who crosses barriers- The distinctive nature of Pentecostalism was linked with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit for the power to do God's Mission- There will always be a tension when an unbeliever visits church. It is the work of the Holy Spirit, called conviction. No matter how seeker friendly we strive to be, this work is important for salvation- Mission is the mother of theology. The church of God doesn't have a mission. God's mission has a church

  2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Most of us have heard about the craze of 'Tebowing'. When a famous football player knelt down in prayer on the football field, and now millions of people take pictures of themselves kneeling down in the same position, presumably praying to God like Tim Tebow. This man is having a tremendous impact on millions of people across the world, much in the same way that Daniel did in the Old Testament. A couple of weeks ago, a young boy named Solomon participated in our District Fun Arts, where students showcase their ministry gifts in a fun environment. He did a short sermon on faith, and in the middle of the message, he gave us an illustration: he 'Tebowed' for all to see. It was a wonderful example of just how far our public demonstration of our faith can go in impacting the world around us. The Tebow had moved from the National Football League stage to a young boy preaching his first message in Nebraska. When you stand up for God, you never know how far the impact will reach.

They are up $40 on average a month in STL offerings! - Here's a Fine Arts testimony from a student to me on Facebook: Fine arts has really made a difference, and it is reaching the goal you guys have said time and time again. Its not a competition to me. Well, it is. I get excited if I win something, and more excited if I get to go to nationals. But, that's not the point. My main focus when I go to fine arts is to honor God, and learn new things. I get excited when I better myself from the year before. I am finding this year that winning is not important to me, the important thing is to do better, and to honor and worship God in all I do. Thank you for your part in Fine Arts.   2). Blog Entry: Inviting Worship - A common aspect of just about any church and youth group is that of worship, a time of singing songs to God. This is known both in the church and outside of it as well. Getting my haircut yesterday, the stylist even mentioned that though she doesn't attend church, she knows that every church is active in the arts. - This can be a great way for us to be more attractive to those in the community. But most churches have a reputation for being active in the arts, but only in a traditional way. If people want to pursue more contemporary art styles, they don't think they can look for help in the church. This shouldn't be! Through programs like Fun Arts and Fine Arts, we can help our students explore exciting new methods and means of expressing themselves through the arts in worship of God. - Worship is not just music, though music is often central to its components. Many groups play CD's or Worship DVD's if musicians aren't available. Even if you have a band, this can still be a good change occasionally for a service, or even just one song. Schools also are active in the arts, so consider talking with your local choir or band director and seeing if there are ways to partner together to train students and give them music opportunities. Don't be afraid to occasionally offer different types of artistic worship including painting, writing, dancing, etc. A pastors message can also reinforce the arts by including artistic illustrations and objects. - It's important to invest in your worship area. Every year some money should be set aside for improvements and repairs in your sound, lights, videos, etc. Avail your team to worship training opportunities. Take a trip to visit another church or youth ministry (or maybe one of our colleges) and observe their worship experience. Contact some of the worship 'experts' in our district, including Mike King, TJ Cristobal, Jeff Booth, Geri Anderson, and Jody Stamer.
  3). Ministry of the Day: Nebraska Fine Arts - A great way to reinforce the exploration of the arts in your teenagers - registration deadline is this Friday!

My kids went with my wife to Bellevue to be with our family while I stayed back in GI to work. My son Ryan wasn't feeling too well, with a cough and a runny nose, but I sent him with some great medicine. One week later, they came back and every one of them had a cough and runny nose. My daughter Abby is even staying home from school today because of it. Wash your hands often during this current sick season. And learn the lesson, things spread fast when you spend quality time together.

The boy was sitting in the front row, with a great view. Suddenly, the missionary moved forward, forgetting about the steps leading up to the stage, and fell down on his face right in front of the boy. He got up, unharmed, and said to the boy 'well, that's what happens when you get old'. The children's pastor remarked that she felt God wanted it to happen so he would never forget the first time he went to church. - A former Jr. High student of mine from being a youth pastor in Bellevue wrote to me on Facebook. He is stationed at Fort Benning in Georgia and he's recently had 15 of his friends make a commitment to Christ. It all started when one of his friends saw his Fire Bible on his desk. They all became interested and a small Christian community was born!

  2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Messages One of the most important aspects of our ministries are the MESSAGES; the moments where people speak to the group. Our superintendent in NE, Pastor Dwight, often says that pastors can start on a path toward success by doing hospital visitations and preaching good messages. Much time in our Bible colleges is devoted to teaching students how to prepare and deliver quality sermons. Unfortunately, this is an area that is often least attended to by our leaders today. We must start with planning our preparation time. It's wise to have certain pockets of time assigned weekly to your preparation and planning for speaking. Find a place where it's easy for you to focus and eliminate distractions. Make it a point to include a file system of notes and illustrations, good commentaries, worship, and prayer in the process. You may want to consider speaking in series, which help with deciding a weekly topic. I used to speak in 12 different series throughout the year, once a month. You can figure that you would personally speak 3 of the 4 times a month, with a guest speaker or special event for the other weekly meeting. A few other ideas: 1) Sharpen your speaking skills by attending public speaking seminars in your city or online, 2) Visit a partner ministry once or twice a year to gain new ideas from their style, 3) Videotape yourself and go back to it to see how you look and sound from the seats, 4) Empower those with a speaking gift in your ministry to partner with you, and 5) Use several visual illustrations, since it is now considered that well over half of our population learn best from visual stimulation.

  2). Blog Entry: Different Culture - I go a to an 'Express' Gym that is part of the YMCA in Grand Island. It's near my house and has a magnetic card given to its members for easy access. There are no locker rooms or other big amenities, just workout equipment and weights. They have several TV's mounted on the wall across from the aerobic equipment. The other day a man showed up with an entire xbox gaming system. He plugged it into the TV across from his machine and played a game of HALO while jogging on an elliptical. I like to read, but never thought of bringing my entire gaming system to keep playing the game at the gym. We live in a different culture of easy access.

Its been a long journey but I've never seen him so happy and it's really stirred up conversations in our circle of friends and we've gotten a chance to share the gospel with our friends! His girlfriend was especially opposed to the whole thing at first but now she's more perplexed than anything. She sees that the change in him is a good one and I can tell she is curious. God is beginning to do awesome amazing incredible things in my group of friends and beyond!'

  2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - This past weekend was our Kids Fun Arts, and our Fine Arts for teens is coming up at the end of March. Both of these events focus on encouraging the use of ministry gifts in our young people. Several of our churches consistently ask me for help with people that can assist them in worship, especially in regard to music, video, and drama. Though our students may or may not be able to immediately help with these needs, as we enable them to explore these gifts in their lives we are making an investment in our future. - Maybe you don't feel like you have the expertise to teach the students these gifts. I would encourage you to bring them to the events and let them experience the atmosphere for themselves. Many will begin to explore the arts on their own, and develop their gifts over time. Also, partner with your local school district. They have teachers and students they may want to assist you in the process and get involved as well. - Today's culture of social networks and awesome technology is leading to incredible artistic expressions from our young people. The church needs to embrace this venture and help our students create new ways to market our churches and proclaim the message of truth. Even if it's not a gifting or passion of your own, please do not withhold these opportunities from your students.

  2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - The National Office has recently made an effort to streamline ministries and pursue greater collaboration between the departments. At the recent National DYD conference, this annual event was adapted to invite all department directors and executive officers from each district. We worked together for two days on different projects from the Church Multiplication Network. It was a beginning of a concept we can expect from our National Office in the next few years. The National COO, Saul, conveyed a vision that has propelled his work with our National Superintendent (CEO) Dr. George Wood. They saw a large steam ship attached to several tug boats. The job of a tub boat is to guide the larger ship through a narrow passage. The problem was that each tug boat was moving in it's own direction and the steam ship was barely moving, if moving at all. Their goal is to get all of the tug boats (departments) moving in the same direction so we can guide the steam ship (National Assemblies of God) in the way we believe it should go. Just as our National Office is pursuing this initiative, you should see more collaboration in our district office in Nebraska, and now is a good time to consider your policies and work flow in the local church as well! A great resource to help with this would be Dennis Tyson, former President of Hastings College and partner with Faith in overseeing our Kids Max District Kids Outreach program.

I looked at him through my rear view mirror, wanting to see who this 'rude' person was. But as I looked at the mirror, I noticed in the foreground that the light had turned green. Whoops! He wasn't being rude honking at me, I was being rude making him wait longer than he should. I know I don't mind honking when others do that to me. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

  2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - I've been reading a book about Narcissism (The Narcissism Epidemic by Jean M. Twenge). This is a destructive personality trait that is actually quite common among people in our culture today. The main reasons were because it feels good and has great short term benefits, but it also has long term costs and makes other people suffer. The debt crisis, low standards of morality among teens, lack of public giving and volunteering, and rise of celebrity lifestyles have been attributed to this cause. Nothing is expected to change until we address social practices in parenting and education, celebrities and media, the Internet, and economics. In short, encouraging individuality at all costs may actually contribute to the problem. Helping people see the things we have in common may induce some humility which will go a long way in improving our quality of life and relationships. 'Narcissism causes almost all of the things that Americans hoped high self-esteem would prevent, including aggression, materialism, lack of caring for others, and shallow values.'

  2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons My wife and I were driving home from Branson two weekends ago, during a major snowstorm. Everything was fine until we hit Lincoln, NE. We usually only have 90 minutes to him from there but it took us just over 3 hours. We counted 57 cars off the road because of the weather. Traffic was extremely slow, and only going 10 MPH we were still sliding at times all over the interstate. Wedged in between several semi trucks, there was no way to get around them, but some impatient people still tried. One car that was immediately in front of us quickly swerved over to the shoulder to pass the big trucks, not being able to stand the wait any longer. Sure enough, a few miles down the road we spotted a car like theirs in the ditch. Sometimes, it just pays to slow down, play it safe, and enjoy the ride.

  2). Testimonies - Recently, I was interacting with Bob Ryan, children's pastor at Omaha Glad Tidings Church. He was telling me some amazing testimonies. First, they've been having team leader meetings for his children's ministry. He has several teens that serve with him in a variety of roles. During the meeting, they had a time of prayer and several of them were filled with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The church had also been having a week of prayer. The church was open 3 times daily: 6am, noon, and 6pm. Again, there were several reports of people coming to pray and being filled with the Holy Spirit. Amazing!
  3). Ministry of the Day: Young Adult Ministries - Our National Young Adult department has several resources to help you facilitate a strong ministry with young people.

  2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - You know how several places like theaters and libraries have signs that ask you to turn your cell phones off? I know that can get annoying, but they are there for a reason. - I was speaking at a church in Nebraska last month. In the middle of the worship service, we quieted down and someone had a message in tongues. This is nothing new to those of us in the Assemblies of God. We waited a few moments for someone to speak out with the Holy Spirit inspired interpretation. A man with a booming voice began to speak, and almost instantaneously, his cell phone went off - What a challenge to listen to the message God had for us with a cute cellphone jingle broadcasting at the same time. Make sure to turn your cell phone off. And remember, it's much easier to communicate a powerful message to others if your voice is the only one they are hearing. Eliminate distractions for better focus.
  3). Ministry of the Day: STL Superbowl Challenge - Join me in giving an offering this week equal to the total points scored in the Superbowl ($38) for Speed the Light

  2). Blog Entry: Testimonies - Our AIM director Bruce Riddle was updating our Youth Committee last week on the status of our planned missions trip to Ireland this summer. Ireland is a country that has long been divided among denominational lines: Catholics and Protestants. They rarely work together, and several times have fought in vicious battles. This is changing though. In Derry, Ireland, where our missions trip is taking place, the Catholics and Protestants are working together to help us with our work projects in the city. This is unheard of in that part of the world, but God is moving!

Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - The last session of our Ministers Winter Retreat last month in Kearney, NE was titled 'How to have a good church fight' You can download the audio of the message here (connect as a guest then download). Rod Loy mentioned that there are 3 main levels of fights within the church. The first is focused around the Essentials. These are the doctrines of our faith, the intangibles that make us who we are. The second category is fights over traditions. These revolve around the methods and practices that we have been using in our churches for many years. Finally, many fights in churches occur because of difference of opinion. We must decide with our churches that we will only choose to 'fight' over the essentials - if it's not an essential than it's not worth a true fight. Too many church divisions and disruptive splits occur because of problems with opinions or traditions.

  Monday - Life Lessons

  1). Song of the Day: Neely (NE Fine Arts Concert, March 30th) - ♫ In the Middle ♫
  2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - I was at the gym early in the morning and a lady came in that I had never seen before. She quickly went to a treadmill and began to walk next to a man that was running. She pulled a hoodie over her head and put headphones on, listening to her favorite music. A few minutes later everyone heard a loud 'THUD'. We looked over, and she had fallen off the treadmill. The man stopped running to help her out and she admitted that she was very tired, had closed her eyes, and must have dozed off. After seeing that she was OK, she resumed her workout and the rest of us bit our lips and held the laughter in. - Not 5 minutes later, we heard another loud 'THUD'. Expecting to see her sprawled out on the floor again, we turned but only saw the remote. She admitted that she was turning channels on the TV, but dozed off again and dropped the remote. We wisely recommended that she wake up a little bit, or move to a bike where she could sit down. - Working out is a great thing to do, but proper rest can go a long way as well! In ministry, we have a lot of late nights. Make sure to prioritize a good amount of sleep to be in your best shape for workday.

  2). Blog Entry: Testimonies - My wife came to Kearney last week to attend the New Ministers Luncheon at Ministers Retreat. It was a great chance for her to connect with people at a district event, something she is more able to do now that she is a Century 21 Real Estate (check out her FB page here). About to leave to head home, she asked if she should take the interstate or the highway. I suggested the interstate, since the hotel we were at was right next to it. - In true form, she went against my suggestion and took the highway. Driving through Shelton, she got a real estate call. Amazingly, it was from a man in Shelton calling about some real estate options. He had visited Kim several weeks before, but she had lost contact with him. Usually, that means the client will contact some other realtor whenever they like. But he called back and Kim is now helping him with his real estate needs.
  3). Ministry of the Day: JBQ - Junior Bible Quiz is a great way to help your children memorize the Word of God, while giving you a chance to connect with other leaders/groups across the state.

  2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - The last night of Ministers Winter Retreat, our secretary treasurer had the presbyters stand up. We prayed over them as our leaders. It was one of the first moments I could remember specifically praying for them in such a way since I've been the DYD of NE. - The role of a Presbyter is significant, but often times misunderstood. They are the governing body for our district. They work in close relationship with our executive officers, and especially Pastor Dwight. They help to keep him accountable and enforce his vision for Nebraska. They represent all 11 geographical sections of NE, voted upon by their peers in their respective areas. They are pastors that are ordained and recognized as leaders. They help decide which business comes to the district council for the entire body of pastors to vote upon. They assist in credentialing and disciplining ministers for our state. They provide leadership to district affiliated churches in their sections. They also serve as a communication piece, both from the pastors to the district leaders and from the district leaders to the ministers. - As you can see, this is an important, powerful leadership position in our state. I encourage you to pray for your presbyters. If you are struggling with district items, go to them and talk about it. If you need help with a situation in your local ministry, ask them. If you have something in the district that has benefitted you, let them know. They are there for you!

  2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Last week was our annual Ministers Winter Retreat in Nebraska. It was a great time of connecting with other pastors from across the state. On the first morning of a three day event, we offered free coffee to all of our ministers, as a way to thank them for their incredible giving to STL and BGMC in 2011. We had just purchased a new professional coffee machine for district use and we thought this would be a great way to help break it in with our pastors. It worked great. Everyone appreciated the free cup of joe, and they saw that it was a quality blend so they came back to pay for more throughout the rest of the event.
  - Sometimes, letting people have a taste will help them buy into the entire vision of what you are trying to accomplish. A little taste can go a long way.

  2). Blog Entry: Testimonies - Recently, a young man in one of the jr. high schools of Grand Island, NE died on campus. He was a teenager with special needs and it was a tragic situation where his health deteriorated quickly. One of the ladies from Northridge is a teacher in that school and she asked the principal if she could pray at the end of the staff meeting, concerning the situation. He gave her permission with the allowance for any that didn't want to participate to leave before she began. She prayed and ministered to many teachers struggling with their faith. Later on, the principal found her in the hallway and thanked her for standing up for what she believed in and said that he was proud of her for doing the right thing.
  3). Ministry of the Day: Pop out for Missions - Challenge your students to give up soda/pop for one month, and turn in the money they would have spent on that drink to BGMC missions around the world.

  2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner Last night, our speaker at Ministers Retreat spoke about when we as leaders go through times when we feel attacked. He gave us a key verse from Acts 23:11 'The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”' This was right after Paul had testified in front of the Jewish people, but they had him thrown in prison. It didn't go very well, yet God appeared to him to encourage him not to give up. These are some of the lessons we learned. God was with him all along. God approved of his message even if the people around him didn't. Though the results were not what he wanted, God was still pleased. God's plan will sometimes be met with resistance among those we deliver it to. Though we may feel like failures, God still has us in His hand. Though we may feel insignificant now (Jerusalem), God has bigger plans for us than we can possibly imagine (Rome).

  2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - My wife is a realtor in Grand Island. Since she started this job last summer, she takes a tour once a week of different homes recently listed in the area. It's been an eye opener, not only for her as a new realtor, but also as a Christian. Sometimes, as Christians, we spend so much time with other Christians we forget what life can be like for those without Jesus. She's gone into several homes that were full of broken families, wayward teens, abuse, and the list goes on and on. We would all be better as witnesses for Christ if we could take a 'tour' of our city and see what's really going on in the streets of my mission field.

  2). Blog Entry: Testimonies - Yesterday, we received our STL totals back from the National Office. As a state, we gave $12,000 more than the previous year. Several churches gave new records in their personal giving, and we are online to finish all of our current projects for our missionaries. - I spoke to Pastor Dwight earlier this week. We had some great giving towards the campgrounds this past year. Recently, a $25,000 gift was given to help alleviate the debt on the Dining Center. We also have some savings to start working on projects to update our Rec Center in 2012.

It's important to teach our teens the Word of God, and stay close to them as they are traveling through this tough period of life. Some recent reports have tried to cast a bad light on youth ministry though, suggesting it isn't that effective for the time and energy we put into it.   2). Blog Entry: Reach the Children - Yesterday, Missionaries Trent and Angie Mettenbrink visited my home church in Grand Island, NE. They spoke in our Sunday School class and preached in the main service. Angie left after Trent started preaching, and presented to the children in their service on the other side of the building. She gave each child a small plastic bag with certain fun supplies, titled a MISSIONARY SURVIVAL KIT. My daughter Abby loved it, and showed it to me as soon as service was over. - Last night, as we were all preparing to go to bed, my daughter said good night to me and then told me 'don't forget to pray for those missionaries'. This morning, on our way to drop her off at school, she prayed for them again! - Raise up a child in the way they should go and they won't depart from it. Help our children interact with world changers. And putting things in the hands of listeners will help them remember what you said later on.

  2). Blog Entry: Testimonies - This past week I had the privilege of attending the Great Plains Regional Salt Conference, for college students, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mike Amiot (regional leader) and his team did a great job hosting the event for several hundred students from across the north central area of the US. We had 4 different Chi Alpha from NE represented. We heard from several students that felt a touch of God upon their lives, and many reported divine healing in their physical bodies. - Brian Korell, NE Youth Alive Director, forwarded me a monthly report he received from one of our many NE Campus Missionaries. His focus is to be the best example of Jesus he can be by sharing his story with co-workers and friends when the time is right.

  2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Prayer - I've enjoyed this week of prayer, watching so many of our pastors and churches post about their prayer meetings to begin the year. Yesterday, one of our youth pastors in the Siouxland section twittered a quote that Jesus' disciples didn't ask him to teach them how to lead, but they asked him to teach them how to pray. I've been reading a book by the author Francis Frangipane, in which he encourages leaders to bathe every action in prayer. - Prayer needs to be a priority; a regular part of our lives, both personally and in ministry. When I was a youth pastor, I modeled this in two ways. First, every work day started off with our entire staff praying together in the sanctuary from 8 to 9am. We often had Christian music playing lightly in the background, and regularly I would read a little from the Scriptures before filling most of the time in prayer with God. Second, we would offer pre-service prayer at each of our youth services. Each leader was required to try to participate. If they picked up students, they made sure to arrange a time so the student could also accompany them in prayer as well. - At dinner during the Great Plains Regional Salt Conference last night in Sioux Falls, we heard a report about one of our young adults in Nebraska who was having some issues with her pregnancy. Someone suggested we pray for her immediately, which we did. - What are you doing to model prayer for those you lead, both personally and in your ministry. Here's a great article from NPR about how prayer is beneficial, even in a physical sense.

  2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - In Omaha, I was driving to the gym in the early morning. On the way, the car in front of me seemed to be tail-gating the car in front of him. At an intersection, he pulled over over to the turning lane in the left at the light. I noticed the driver from the car in front of him glaring at him angrily. Later, a few miles down the road, that same car pulled up to a slow moving vehicle in our lane, and tail-gated him, until he moved to the side to allow him through. - Isn't it interesting how we don't like to be tail-gated, but when we tail-gate someone else, it's OK? Remember the golden rule - 'do unto others what you would have them do unto you' (Matthew 7:12)
